Introduction

Welcome and thank you for your ongoing participation in middle school OpenSciEd (“OSE”) and interest in the summer 2024 unit professional development (“PD”) extension and facilitator training grant. This is a one-time grant with the goals of 1) supporting Cohort 1 districts with additional OSE PD seats for the summer of 2024 to accommodate staff transitions, and 2) developing district-based “facilitator” teams to support localized PD.

Funding and support for school grants is provided by the One8 Foundation. Feel free to reach out to Micah Joselow (mjoselow@one8.org) at One8 with any questions.

Application Instructions and Expectations

Applications should be submitted by the district/LEA. Each district may apply for teacher PD seats and/or facilitator training seats:

Teacher PD Extension Seats:

  • Districts may apply for up to 3 seats per OSE Cohort 1 school for teachers wishing to attend OSE unit PD in the summer of 2024.
  • These seats are intended to provide unit PD to teachers who were not budgeted into the original grant due to staff transitions over the last 3 years.
  • Schools are expected to demonstrate that they have exhausted initial grant training funds to be eligible for additional PD seats.
  • These PD seats are only for PD sessions taking place in July, August, and September 2024. These seats will not roll over into the winter nor future school years.
Facilitator Training Seats:
  • Districts may apply for up to 2 facilitators per district for summer 2024 training.
  • Facilitators are expected to support local PD through the model of district-based PD facilitation. Facilitators should be identified and have an interest in leading in-state PD over the summer in future years.
  • Qualified teachers should have completed a minimum of 4 OSE middle school unit PDs by May 2024, including the Launch PD.
  • Facilitator seats are only for sessions taking place in the summer of 2024. These seats will not roll over into the winter nor future school years.
Schools may apply for:
  • Only teacher unit PD extension seats.
  • Only facilitator training seats.
  • Teacher unit PD extension seats AND facilitator training seats.
Other Notes
  • Teacher unit PD extension seats must fund core science teachers to attend Summer 2024 PD.
  • Facilitator training may fund science teachers, coaches, or other leaders at the school or district level.
  • Additional kit funding is not included in these extension grants.
  • Funding associated with this grant is intended to be used in the summer of 2024 only. Seat allotments will not be carried over into future school years.
Note: Grant awards will not be transferred to schools as direct payments but will rather be distributed through the summer 2024 PD provider, the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), to cover the costs of professional learning. Grant award sizes are determined by the number of approved PD seats for teachers and facilitators.
